5 Kawasaki Vulcan S 650 Performance mods 2026

Updated: Mar 15

The Kawasaki Vulcan S650 is a remarkable motorcycle that combines style, comfort, and performance. However, for enthusiasts and daily riders alike, there’s always room for improvement. Whether you want to enhance speed, handling, or braking. Performance upgrades can make a significant difference. This guide will walk you through various upgrades that can elevate your Kawasaki Vulcan S 650 to new heights.

Performance Upgrades Overview

When considering performance upgrades for your Vulcan S 650, it’s crucial to focus on several key areas:

  1. Exhaust System Upgrade

  2. Performance Air Filter

  3. Fuel Controller

  4. Brake System Improvements

  5. Seating Position

The heart of any performance upgrade lies in the engine. Upgrading some components that can help your stock Kawasaki Vulcan S come to life! Let’s explore each of these areas in detail.

  1. Exhaust System Upgrades

Usually, one of the first and most common upgrade to a motorcycle because you can't stand listing to that lawnmower sound. I know I know it's not a V-Twin; it is not going to give you that Harley rumble. However, that doesn't mean that this bike can't sound good! Yes, the Kawasaki Vulcan S has a parallel twin engine with 180-degree crank shaft set up but you can still make your presence known on the road. If you are the type of biker that wants to be heard and rightfully so because how many times do we hear car drivers who hit bikers say, "I didn't see or hear the bike, they came from no where!" You want them to hear you idle? I got some options for you here.

  1. Performance Air Filters

A cold air intake system allows your engine to breathe better by drawing in cooler air. This can lead to improved horsepower and throttle response. Brands like K&N and DNA offer high-quality options specifically designed for the Kawasaki Vulcan S 650.

Kawasaki Vulcan S Performance Air Filters

  1. Fuel Controller/Piggyback Tuner

If you are going to do some bolt on performance mods yourself or at motorcycle shop, specifically a high flow air filter and exhaust this is the icing on the cake to get fuel, air, and timing in sync for optimal performance.

  • Function: Adjusts fuel delivery (up to +-15%) and sometimes ignition timing (+-8 degrees) to maximize performance, especially after modifications like exhausts or air filters.

  • Piggyback, NOT a Flash: It connects between the factory ECU and injectors, sitting in line with the wiring harness.

  • Reversible: Because it does not reflash the ECU, it can be easily removed to return the vehicle to stock settings.

  • Features: Features include dual-map switching on the fly, USB connectivity for tuning via Dyno jet Power Core software, and support for accessories like quick shifters.

  • Versatility: The PC6 is ideal for modern, heavily encrypted ECUs that are difficult to reflash.

  1. Performance Brake Pads

Many riders complain the bike should have a lot more braking power with a dual rotor set up. Since the Kawasaki Vulcan S has one single brake disk rotor per tire, then next best upgrade are performance brake pads.

Sintered Brake Pads

Pros

  • Good initial bite and strong progressive braking.

  • Resistance to brake fading.

  • Excellent longevity and durability for aggressive riders.

Cons

  • Noisier.

  • Creates more dust.

  • Can wear out the disk (Rotors) faster.

Organic Brake Pads

Pros

  • Quiet.

  • Gentle on rotors.

  • Lower cost.

Cons

  • Wears quicker.

  • Brake fade.

  • Lack of brake feel.

Ceramic Brake Pads Pros

  • Quite

  • Minimal brake dust.

  • Less abrasive on brake rotors.

  • Excellent Durability and longevity.

Cons

  • Less performance in very cold climates.

  • Longer brake in period.

  • Can have initial higher cost.

5. Seating position

Many Kawasaki Vulcan S owners bought their bike like me second hand and saved a ton of money. Well since we didn't get that dealership experience one thing that is overlooked by many is the comfort of the rider. One of the biggest selling points of the Vulcan S 650 is its customizable seating, peddle, and handlebar ergonomics for your specific body and height. This is called the Kawasaki Vulcan S Ergo fit. With this Ergo-Fit, not only can tall riders fit comfortably on the bike, but short riders like me can as well (5'6" and under - 6'1" and over). It's so clever how they were able to achieve this; many other motorcycle brands would simply see it as a logistical nightmare or a waste and just pass the problem to the customer. Not Kawasaki! They actually solved the fitment issues by providing 3 seat sizes (sit further back, middle, or closer to the tank), 3 foot peg positions (closer, middle, or further for shorter or longer legs), and 3 handlebar angles (reduced, mid, extended arm reach). Never underestimate how important it is to be able to maneuver and control the bike with ease and comfort when having all your hands, feet, and limbs in the right responsive position.

Conclusion

Enhancing your Kawasaki Vulcan S 650 can turn it into a high-performance machine that satisfies your riding experience. Engine upgrades, including air and exhaust modifications, along with often overlooked aspects like braking power, are vital for enhancing the overall riding experience. Even something as simple as proper size handlebars, and footpegs. With the appropriate modifications, your Vulcan S can provide an exciting ride that improve upon the stock experience.
